Anyone who likes GLEE, or the singing competition show THE SING-OFF on NBC, should be looking forward to the release of “PITCH PERFECT” coming up in October. Even though there are quite a few less-than-believable moments in the movie, all-in-all it is quite entertaining. You have to be able to accept the unlikelihood that the groups could just spontaneously burst into song in perfect harmonies without having seen the words after just picking the song out of the blue, complete with choreography and not make any mistakes.
At the beginning of the movie, and in a “reprise” later on, there is an absolutely GROSS scene where one of the girls loses control of her bulimia and has ridiculously over-the-top projectile vomiting. In the later scene, when one of the girls finds herself laying in the pool of puke and she starts making a puke angel, anyone with a weak stomach just might lose their buttered popcorn, so be warned!
One of the subplots of the movie is the contentious love/hate affair between Anna Kendrick’s character, Beca, and Skylar Astin’s character, Jesse.
Having appeared together in the Broadway show, “Spring Awakening”, they both are really naturally talented and lead the cast in song after song, all without musical accompaniment using only their voices. But without a doubt, the one who steals the show is Rebel Wilson’s character, Fat Amy.
She’s self confident, boisterous, non-apologetic and takes no prisoners. For example- “You call yourself Fat Amy?” “Yeah, so two skinny bitches like you don’t do it behind my back.” (with a British accent!) And another great exchange- “I have a feeling we should kiss.” to which she replies, “I sometimes have a feeling I should do crystal meth, but then I think, mmmm, better not!”
The best music of the movie however comes from “The Trebletones” boys group.
With a very talented group of nerdy geeks, they provide some beautiful renditions of “You Spin My Head Round”, “Hey Mickey”, and more! Led by Adam Devine with great support from Brock Kelly and Skylar Astin, the boys group start the movie by winning the National Title for the Collegiate Acapella Championships.
It is no blockbuster or Academy Award nominee, but “PITCH PERFECT” is entertaining, refreshingly musical, like a college GLEE, but with slightly more young adult college-aged angst and problems, with some very hilarious moments blended in. “PITCH PERFECT” comes out in theaters October 5th!
