Tom Cruise storms back onto the silver screen in what I feel could be the best movie he’s made in decades!

Tom Cruise surveys the devastated Earth while Ocean Platforms churn away sucking up Earth’s natural resources.

Set in a post-apocalyptic Earth in the late 21st century, the seamless special effects and CGI along with the brilliant acting by Morgan Freeman, Tom Cruise, and their supporting cast makes this a must-see movie if you’re a sci-fi movie buff.

Earth was visited by a gigantic spaceship which suddenly blew the moon to smithereens resulting in devastating earthquakes and tidal floods due to the gravitational shift from the moon’s destruction. Then an invading army of aliens attacked, annihilating most of what was left of mankind. In order to fight against them, mankind was forced to resort to atomic nuclear war which won the war but devastated the world, leaving it uninhabitable and forcing humankind to evacuate to Titan, one of the moons of Saturn, to survive until Earth was once again inhabitable.

Jack Harper performing routine maintenance on an attack drone which has broken down.

Tom Cruise plays Jack Harper who is one of an elite team of personnel which has stayed behind on Earth to secure and maintain a network of battle drones which patrol the skies to protect the Earth from “Scavs”, scavengers which are presumably the remnants of the alien invading army who try to attack and destroy the gigantic stations which are stationed all around the earth processing the oceans for minerals and energy to send to Titan in order to sustain the humans until they can safely return to Earth.

The skyhome of Jack Harper & Victoria high above the devastated Earth.

Tom is stationed in a sky-home high above the devastation of the landscape, safely in the clouds where he lives with his team partner, Victoria who is played by Andrea Riseborough. His dreams and nightmares are haunted however, by images of a strange woman who he feels he should recognize or remember, but due to a mandatory memory wipe 5 years ago, he can’t consciously recall her.

Jack rescues Julia Rusakova, the survivor of a spaceship crash.

Olga Kurylenko plays Julia Rusakova, who is an American astronaut who mysteriously falls from the sky, deepening the mysteries troubling Jack.

“OBLIVION” is one of the best post-apocalyptic movies that I’ve ever seen. The $100-million-budgeted film is written, directed, and produced by Joseph Kosinski, who also directed “TRON:Legacy”. Tom Cruise, in his usual fashion performs his own stunt work which gives the film a genuine feel of realism and adventure. Instead of his usual steely-eyed chiseled face which seems like it could almost break that has become so synonymous of the Mission Impossible movies, in this film he shows a spectrum of emotions I haven’t seen from him for decades.

Morgan Freeman takes Jack prisoner and questions him.

Morgan Freeman plays a pivotal role which I won’t say much about because I don’t believe in giving away spoilers, but his performance is awesome, as usual.

I really enjoyed this film for another reason. It doesn’t leave you hanging, waiting for the next sequel. It finishes the story in a beautiful way so that you don’t have to wait a year or two to see what happens next. It’s refreshing to see a free-standing action-adventure sci-fi movie. If you like that genre, this movie should be on your must-see list. It is Tom Cruise at his best!

About BearChub4u

After 20 years of being in a sometimes happy, sometimes frustrated marriage, I decided it was time for me to stop living a life of lies and deceit and be true to who I really was, a gay man, and to start pursuing my own pathway to happiness. That pathway has had many high points and low points with many obstacles thrown at me by fate. While I have met many wonderfully sweet men over the years, some for short term relationships and others for brief encounters, my search continues for that one "Mr. Right" that I can be with long term, sharing everything in our lives together. http://bearchub4u.com/search.html to see who I'm searching for. Maybe it's you?

  1. I must confess, for various reasons, I have not been drawn to watch a Tom Cruise motion picture, but I given my love of Lee Child’s novels, I AM drawn to watch “Reacher,” and given my love of anything Sci-Fi, I AM drawn to watch “Oblivion.”

This is not the first time you have reviewed a motion picture on your blog that I want to see, and I cannot thank you enough for the recommendation.

Now to make time to watch the motion pictures you are reviewing!!
